Honest limits, ours first

Number Beasts is a puzzle first

It teaches bonds by making them the mechanic (launch a 7 into a 5 and a 2 carries on), which is excellent for seeing what a bond is and weak for drilling speed. If your child needs fast recall of all the pairs to 20, add flashcards or a drill app.

No progress reports

No accounts means no parent dashboard. You see stars and badges on the device, nothing by email. Schools' tools (NumBots, Math Shed) are built the other way round.

Chaos Laboratory is for older kids

Splitters, converters, keys and gates are a leap from "make 10". Expect to sit beside a six-year-old there.

Subscriptions elsewhere

Math Bridges and nonna both list subscriptions. Fine if used; check the renewal before handing over the iPad.

Old apps still sell

Squeebles (2021) and Number Bonds! (2019) are still on sale. Older apps can break on new iOS versions; test before buying.

Questions homeschool parents ask

What are number bonds?

Pairs (or sets) of numbers that make a target: 3 and 7 make 10, 6 and 4 make 10. Knowing them by sight is the foundation for adding and subtracting without counting on fingers, which is why they sit in Year 1 (UK) and Kindergarten to Grade 1 (US) curricula.

What age is Number Beasts for?

The App Store rating is 4+, and the listing describes large readable numbers, two-step tap-to-aim, VoiceOver labels and an aim assist you can switch off. In practice the bonds-to-10 stages suit children who already recognise numbers to 10; the 15 and 20 beasts and the Chaos Laboratory converters suit older children and adults who like puzzles.

Is it really free with no catch?

Per the listing: no ads, no accounts, no tracking, no in-app purchases, everything stored on the device, works offline. We make it, so check the listing yourself rather than taking our word.

Which app is best for a child who is anxious about maths?

The ones with no timer and no penalty for a wrong answer. In Number Beasts a short launch feeds the beast rather than failing you, and the solver guarantees every stage can be cleared; nonna's listing also emphasises calm pacing. Avoid anything that counts down or shows a leaderboard for a child who is already tense.

Do any of these replace a curriculum?

No. They are practice. Ten minutes of bonds a day beside your maths lessons is the realistic use; the apps that try to be a whole programme (NumBots, Math Shed) are built for schools and are worth a look if you want structured progression and reporting.

How do I check an app before handing it to a child?

Open the App Store listing and read three things: the price and in-app purchase line, the last update date, and the privacy section. Then play the first five minutes yourself. Everything in the table above came from doing exactly that on 4 November 2026.

A winter-break plan, made up but workable

Two weeks off, no lessons, one rule: ten minutes of numbers before screens. Week one is bonds to 10 with Number Beasts' Candy Circuit, one stage a day, par or not. Week two is the Daily Lab each morning, then one Beast Workshop board built by the child for a parent to solve. By January the pairs to 10 are automatic and the eight-year-old has designed six puzzles that a grown-up failed. That last part does more for maths confidence than any badge.

Days 1–5Candy Circuit, stages 1–5. Bonds and feeding.
Days 6–7Replay for par. Aim assist off for one stage.
Days 8–12Daily Lab each morning; one Gravity Grove stage.
Days 13–14Build a board in the Workshop, press Prove, share the code with a grandparent.

What the three worlds look like

Number Beasts First Bond stage: a 4 launched into a 6 beast with the hint 4 plus 6 makes 10, so the beast pops
First Bond: launch a 4 into a 6.
Number Beasts Bond Lab world select: Candy Circuit with stages 1 to 15 and Gravity Grove with mirrors, arrow pads and shuttles
Three worlds, 45 stages, each solver-checked.
Number Beasts Chaos Laboratory splitter stage: a splitter breaks a launched number in two so 8 becomes 4 and 4
Chaos Laboratory: a splitter turns 8 into 4 and 4.
